Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 2 February 2024 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Feb 1 to swap the prime solid-state recorder (SSR) from the B-side to the A-side. This swap concludes a six-month interval of health and trending data collection on SSR-B.

Chandra passed through the 5th, 6th, and 7th eclipses of the season on Jan 27, 30, and Feb 2 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance.

A Chandra press release was issued on Jan 29 announcing that CfA astrophysicist Fred Seward has been awarded the 2024 George Van Biesbroeck Prize from the American Astronomical Society. This prize, given every two years, honors a living individual for long-term extraordinary or unselfish service to astronomy, often beyond the requirements of his or her paid position. Seward is recognized for the establishment and implementation of the first open, peer-reviewed Guest Observer program for a Principal-Investigator led NASA space-based observatory, including developing and refining procedures and policies that later became standard practice for satellite missions. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/24_releases/press_012924.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of XTE J1701-462, which are follow-ups to a Target of Opportunity which was accepted on Mar 28.
