Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 2 April 2021 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A Chandra press release was issued on Mar 31 to announce the selection of 24 new postdoctoral scientists for the NASA Hubble Fellowship Program (NHFP). The program enables outstanding postdoctoral scientists to pursue independent research across NASA Astrophysics, using theory, observation, experimentation, or instrument development. Each fellowship provides the awardee up to three years of support. The newly selected NHFP Fellows will begin their programs in the fall of 2021 at a university or research center of their choosing in the United States. For more information see:

A Chandra image release was issued on Mar 31 announcing the detection of X-rays from Uranus for the first time. Researchers used Chandra observations taken of Uranus in 2002 and then again in 2017. They saw a clear detection of X-rays from the first observation, just analyzed recently, and a possible flare of X-rays in those obtained fifteen years later. For more information see:

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of TW Hya coordinated with HST, an observation of Sgr A* coordinated with the Event Horizon Telescope, and an observation of 2020wnt, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity accepted on Feb 10.
