Col. Eileen Collins, the first female shuttle commander, led the Columbia shuttle crew responsible for the deployment of Chandra. The remainder of the crew consisted of first time pilot Cmdr. Jeff Ashby, Dr. Cady Coleman (second shuttle mission), Dr. Steven Hawley (5th shuttle mission, also deployed Hubble), and Col. Michel Tognini from France (European Space Agency, first shuttle mission, and spent 2 weeks aboard the Russian space station Mir.)
