Cas A, a supernova remnant ~300 years old, is the first extended source calibration image. This remnant is unique, in that it does not fit either a Type I or a Type 11 supernova event. Optically it contains many bright, high-energy "knots" of material. Cas A is the brightest radio source in the sky.
