This animation shows a conceptualized view of Deep Impact's encounter with comet Tempel 1. On July 4, 2005, Deep Impact's impactor collided with the comet, creating a crater and ejecting material from the comet's nucleus into space. Astronomers will continue to monitor the comet with an armada of ground-based and space-borne observatories including Chandra.
