Combined Chandra X-ray Image of Vela Pulsar Jet
This image of the Vela Pulsar Jet was created by combining 8 separate ACIS observations from Chandra. By adding the data together, new details of the jet and pulsar wind nebula emerge. The combined observation time for this image was 44.7 hours.
Scale: 4 x 3.5 arcmin

Individual Chandra Stills of Vela Movie
This series of 13 individual Chandra images of the Vela Pulsar Jet gives astronomers a new look at the crossbow-shaped nebula and the central pulsar. Composited into a time-lapse movie, the images reveal a powerful jet of high-energy particles that is varying erratically.

Optical Image of Vela Supernova Remnant
The optical image on the left shows a wide field view of the Vela Supernova Remnant & Pulsar. This image comes from the Southern H-Alpha Sky Survey Atlas (SHASSA) of the CERRO TOLOLO INTER-AMERICAN OBSERVATORY (CTIO) of La Serena, Chile. The location of the Chandra observation of the Vela Pulsar Jet is shown as a red dot in a close-up of the SHASSA optical image (right).
