Chandra Release - August 30, 2016 Visual Description: CL J1001+0220 The multiwavelength image of the galaxy cluster CL J1001+0220 features a bright fuzzy purple object in the center, surrounded by various dots white, blue, and orange dots scattered around it. The background of the image is very dark. This composite shows CL J1001 in X-rays from NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory (colored in purple), infrared data from ESO's UltraVISTA survey (red, green, and blue), and radio waves from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) (green). The diffuse X-ray emission comes from a large amount of hot gas, one of the defining elements of a galaxy cluster. The galaxy cluster CL J1001 is located about 11.1 billion light years from Earth and may have been caught right after its birth, a brief, but important stage of cluster evolution never seen before.
