Chandra's Previous Numbers Game Results - 2004

Question 9: Chandra's image of the galaxy M87 shows plumes of multimillion degree gas heated by shock waves that have traveled at least 120,000 light years from the center of the galaxy. How does this distance compare to the diameter of our galaxy, the Milky Way? (May 10 - July 14, 2004)

Question 7: The stars in the binary system V471 are only 2 million kilometers apart, a little more than 1/100 of the distance between Earth and the Sun. How large would the Sun appear from a distance of 2 million kilometers? (February 17 - March 24, 2004)

Question 6: The number of stars in the observable universe has been estimated to be about 70 sextillion - or 7 followed by 22 zeros. About how high would a sandpile have to be to have this many grains of sand (assuming a 45 degree slope)? (January 2 - February 17, 2004)
