Time-lapse Movie of Chandra Images (unlabeled)
QuickTime
MPEG & AVI
This time-lapse movie made from observations over a four-year period shows the black hole XTE J1550-564 (center), the approaching eastern jet, and the receding western jet (right). In four years the
jets moved about two light years from the black hole.

Simulation of Jet Evolution
QuickTime
MPEG & AVI
This simulation illustrates the evolution of a magnetized jet of
high-energy particles as it moves at near the speed of light through a
low-density gas. Scientists believe that the western jet in XTE
J1550-564 developed its cometary shape by a similar process.

This animation begins with the location of Centaurus A on the Chandra x-ray sky map. Next, it dissolves from the Chandra X-ray image to the DSS optical to the two NRAO radio images. The final frame fades in the full composite image with x-ray, optical and radio data combined.

Note: High Res movies are very high quality and therefore large. They are best for 56 Kbps connections or faster. Low Res movies are not as high quality, are smaller and are better for slower connections, 33.6 Kbps or slower.
