Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 17 June 2016 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A Chandra image release was issued on Jun 13 describing observations of young stars in the TW Hya association. Young stars less massive than the Sun can blast planet-forming disks surrounding them with powerful amounts of X-rays. Scientists often look for exoplanets around such stars because they have properties more favorable for detection. This result reveals clues about the star formation process and the survival rate of planet-forming disks. Chandra data was used to look at the intensity of X-rays produced by the stars and infrared data showed whether the system had a planet-forming disk. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/twhya/

Of note this week was the release on Jun 15 of CXCDS 10.5 for standard processing, which includes an update to the CIAO 4.8 tools, and upgrades to OS/compilers, off-the-shelf software packages and to the archive/user interface.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of GRB 160509a, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on May 27, and an observation of IGR J17091-3624 coordinated with NuSTAR.
