Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 25 March 2016 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A Chandra image release was issued on Mar 22 describing observations of the impact of Solar storms on Jupiter. Storms from the Sun occasionally release extremely large streams of particles via winds that travel through space. New data show the interaction between the solar wind and Jupiter's magnetosphere can trigger auroras on the gas giant. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2016/jupiter/

Of note this week was the release on Mar 25 of CALDB 4.7.1. This update includes ACIS time-dependent gain corrections for the period Nov 2015 through Jan 2016 and updates to the corrections for the period Aug 2015 through Oct 2015. For details see: http://cxc.harvard.edu/caldb/downloads/Release_notes/CALDB_v4.7.1.html

Also of note last week was a site visit to the Chandra Operations Control Center on Mar 22-24 of the NASA Astrophysics Division Senior Review for Operating Missions.

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of SN2016G and SMC X-1, which were accepted as Targets of Opportunity on Jan 11 and Jan 26 respectively, and an observation of SN 2005ip, which weas accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Mar 2.
