During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Real-time procedures were executed on Dec 10 to conduct a checkout of the HRC-I, using the side-A electronics and including an 11 ks observation of a celestial target. This is a key step to returning the HRC-I to service following the HRC anomaly on Oct 24. The HRC team is evaluating the data. Chandra press and image releases were issued on Dec 11 describing observations of over 1600 galaxies. The key finding of the study is that smaller galaxies lack central X-ray sources. The researchers considered two possible explanations for this. The first is that the fraction of galaxies containing massive black holes is much lower for less massive galaxies. The second is the amount of X-rays produced by matter falling onto these black holes are so faint that Chandra cannot detect them. The group concludes the most likely reason is an actual dearth of black holes in smaller galaxies. For details, see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/press/25_releases/press_121125.html The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
