Operations CXO Status Report

The entire Chandra team was thrilled to hear that Riccardo Giacconi was awarded the Nobel for Physics in recognition "for pioneering contributions to astrophysics, which have led to the discovery of cosmic X-ray sources". Riccardo, together with Harvey Tananbaum, proposed AXAF to NASA in 1976 and he chaired the Science Working Group until 1981. During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to include an observation of the Gamma Ray Burster GRB020531 that was accepted as a 24 hour turn-around Target Of Opportunity (TOO) on 4 October. The schedule was replanned to include the 80ks observation with ACIS-S/HETG and the impacted observations of RCS0224-0002 and MR2251-178 will rescheduled in a later load.
A real-time procedure was completed on Oct 8 to update the on-board ephemeris. Of note this week was a briefing from the Chandra IAR to NASA HQ on their 2002 review of the program. The IAR presents to the MSFC PMC on Oct 16.
The observing schedule for next week is shown below and includes observations of Eta Carinae and M31 coordinated with the Hubble Space Telescope.
