Operations CXO Status Report
Friday 12/21/01 9.00am EST
During the last week, Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.
A realtime procedure was completed on 17 Dec to swap from SSR-B to SSR-A. SSR-A had become full following a series of missed DSN passes caused by technical problems at the sites. Recording automatically switched to SSR-B to avoid data loss. All the data from both recorders were recovered at the next and subsequent passes however, thus maintaining the mission record of no data loss due to over-filled recorders.
A Chandra press release was issued on 19 Dec describing the "aftermath of a titanic explosion" in the elliptical galaxy NGC 4636. For further details and images showing the 25,000 light year symmetric arcs resulting from the explosion, see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/press/01_releases/press_121901.html
The mission planning team completed work on the 2-week schedule to span the holiday period. The schedule of observations is shown below and includes a series of grating observations of Comet Linear, and an observation of Alpha Tauri coordinated with the Hubble Space Telescope.
