New information about the violent youth of stars like our Sun - and implications for planet survival - will be revealed Tuesday, May 10, at 1 p.m. EDT. These findings come from the deepest X-ray observation of a star cluster ever taken, which will also be unveiled during this briefing.

  • COUP: "Chandra Orion Ultradeep Project," a large international project involving dozens of scientists
  • X-ray Data: About 10 days worth of Chandra observation time spread over 13 days (January 2003)
  • Distance to Orion Nebula: 1,500 light years (~9,000 trillion miles or 9 quadrillion miles)
  • Constellation: Orion
  • Sources in Orion: About 1,400 X-ray sources in full Chandra field of view, approximately 30 share properties of our Sun from 4-5 billion years ago
