ENTRY: CECILIA (PAYNE GAPOSCHKIN)
NAME: Sally Delaney
My idea for the new name to be given to the (AXAF) project would be a memorial made to Cecilia Payne Gaposchkin, who has been described as "Probably the Most Eminent Woman astronomer of all time" and "the best man at Harvard " (Edwin Hubble). Amongst her many achievements she was the first person to receive a Ph.D for work at Harvard Observatory. She also managed to combine her career with running a home and raising three children which is somewhat of an achievement even today. I find this very appropriate as the mission will be commanded by Eileen Collins, the first Female Space Shuttle Commander.
